Illinois basketball has started targeting a wing player who could help with depth in the future.

When the 2024-25 campaign rolls around, who knows what the Illini roster will look like? The transfer portal and NBA Draft has Brad Underwood and the Illinois coaching staff constantly patching the team together each season.

That is why recruiting and landing talented players in each class is so important. We need to have a constant flow of talent coming into the program. Darrion Sutton could be a great option for the Illini in 2024.

On Sunday afternoon, Sutton took to social media to announce that he has received a scholarship offer from Illinois. This is a big offer for the talented wing who has suddenly found his recruiting status blowing up.

Illinois basketball could use a talented wing like Darrion Sutton who can stretch the floor in 2024

Sutton is a 6-foot-7, 170-pound small forward from Accelerated Schools in Colorado. He is rated as a four-star recruit and ranked as the No. 124 player in the class of 2024. He is also the No. 32 small forward in the country and the No. 2 player coming out of Colorado.

The recent impressive showing by Sutton during the AAU schedule has really helped boost his notoriety. He is displaying his all-around game for Young and Reckless AAU, which has caught some big-time programs’ eye.

I think the scariest thing about Sutton’s game is that I believe he is still pretty raw as a player. There is so much potential a good coaching staff, like at Illinois, could get out of him.

Sutton can play in the low post and out on the perimeter. For a bigger player, he has great handles. I love that his touch within seven feet is good, but he can also step out and hit a shot from the three-point arc.

Illinois could obviously use someone like Sutton out on the wing. We have a great group of recruits coming in from the 2023 class that features a solid No. 2 and No. 4. Illinois also has another big man coming in from the class of 2024. So, having Sutton join this group as a No. 3 for the Illini would be optimal.

I love this offer from the Illini. Let’s build the class of 2024 into one of the greatest classes in program history.
