No. 5 Forward/Center
Starter: Coleman Hawkins
Some people have disagreed with me when it comes to the No. 5 spot, but I think Illinois could easily go with a lineup that can stretch the floor and hit shots from the perimeter. That lineup would have Matthew Mayer at the No. 4 spot and then Coleman Hawkins at the No. 5 spot.
Hawkins is one of the few returning players from last year’s team. He saw the most time on the court and, I would argue, Hawkins was the best player for Illinois in the last couple of months. I think his game blossomed tremendously. I would like Hawkins’ defense to improve a little this offseason, but that is my only complaint. This kid has incredible talent and the potential to be an All-American. That is why I have him starting at the No. 5 spot.
Backup: Dain Dainja
I believe Dain Dainja is the favorite in some people’s eyes to start at the No. 5 spot, but he is extremely inexperienced and raw. I do believe Dainja could see a start or two, but until he develops more, he should be a primary backup to Hawkins at the No. 5 spot.
Backup: Brandon Lieb
Illinois also has Brandon Lieb as a backup big man. He hasn’t played much during his career, and I don’t expect that to change in 2022-23. But, hopefully, he develops his game and can help us win this upcoming season.
