Illinois basketball played their second game in three nights and took down the Maryland Terrapins in great comeback fashion.

It was a struggle in the first half due to big man foul trouble, but the Illini would keep the game close. Kofi would return and dominate in the second half. After a 29-point performance against Minnesota just two nights earlier, Kofi took down Maryland with a 23-point night on Thursday.

It was clear about midway through the second half that this was Illinois’ game to lose. The Illini would step on the gas pedal and cruise to a 76-64 victory.

Here are four observations from the Illinois basketball win over Maryland.

1. Monte had another big game

For much of the season, I have been hard on Da’Monte Williams and his play on the court. He wasn’t playing well, and something was off about his game.

As of late, Williams’ game has started to come around. Against Minnesota on Tuesday, he put up nine points, five rebounds, four assists, and one steal in 32 minutes of action. He was 3-of-4 from three-point range as well. The three-point shooting was refreshing to see, as he was one of the most efficient shooters from deep last season.

But could Williams continue his great play? That is something I wanted to keep an eye on in the Maryland game. Could he become an asset on the offensive end of the court for the Illini?

The answer ended up being, yes. Williams had another good offensive game for the Orange and Blue. He finished the Maryland victory with nine points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. He also shot 3-of-9 from the floor and 1-of-4 from three-point range.

While the shooting numbers don’t jump off the page, Williams was more aggressive with the basketball. He drove the lane and got to the free throw line and made both of his shots. He looked like he wanted the ball in his hands on offense, and that is great to see.

I want this type of production out of Williams in nearly every game. He has good ability on the offensive end of the court.
