We’ve already gone over the other two members of the Illinois basketball class of 2021, so the final player is RJ Melendez.

Melendez was another top 100 recruit who had a ton of potential coming out of high school. I was thankful the Illini were able to snag this kid because he has played well in the non-conference so far this season.

My expectations for Melendez were about the same as they were for the other two freshmen in Luke Goode and Brandin Podziemski. I wanted to see crisp play and a better understanding of the college game as time went on.

This path is happening for Melendez. Things seem to be going well, and he is clearly learning on the fly. I can’t wait to see what he can do with a full year under his belt.

Melendez is one of the few mismatches on the Illinois basketball team.

Length

One of the many things I love about Melendez in the nine games he has played in the non-conference is his length. This kid is such a versatile player and it has a lot to do with that tremendous length he brings to the court.

Melendez possesses guard skills with a 6-foot-7 frame. He can step out on the perimeter and be dangerous, but he can also get into the paint and score at the bucket. Melendez’s length on defense is what intrigues me most, though. He can shut down opposing offenses well.

Role Player

I love that Melendez has developed his game into being a solid role player already. Illinois needed role players this season, and to get that from a freshman is huge.

With all three freshmen, I didn’t think they would have to step in and be this important this soon. But Melendez has taken it in stride and is a crucial part of this program. He will continue getting a bigger role throughout the season as well.

Overall

Like all of the other freshmen, Melendez is right on track if not slightly ahead of expectations so far. His non-conference went well, and the Big Ten slate should prove to be a fun challenge for the talented wing.

I think Melendez has a bright future and it will only continue getting brighter. His length is going to be extremely important come Big Ten Tournament time.
