Illinois basketball recruiting has been quiet lately, but they made some noise on Friday morning.

While the class of 2022 has yet to officially close up, the Illini are making moves for the future with a big commitment for the class of 2024.

On Friday, Morez Johnson Jr. tweeted out that he is committing to the Illinois basketball program. This is the first piece to fall into place for 2024, and it surely won’t be the last.

Johnson is going to be a big-time player for the Illini come 2024. He is a 6-foot-8, 205-pound power forward from St. Rita High School and resides in Chicago, Illinois. Johnson isn’t ranked or rated by 247Sports just yet because he is from the 2024 class, but you can tell he is going to be a wanted prospect just by the number of scholarship offers already on the table.

Illinois wasn’t the only team eyeing Johnson this early in the game. He also had a scholarship offer from teams like Texas, Ohio State, Florida, and Iowa. If all of these teams are already coming after Johnson, that means he is likely to land somewhere in the top 60 nationally when the full rankings are released.

Illinois basketball just picked up a great player in Morez Johnson Jr.

I implore you, go watch clips of Johnson from the past couple of years. This kid already has the ability to play at the college level, and he is just a sophomore in high school.

Johnson’s big body is only going to get stronger, which will make him an absolute beast to deal with in the paint. He is also extremely coordinated for his size. Usually, high school kids who are young and have that type of size are clunky with their game. That isn’t the case with Johnson. He has control over his body.

It isn’t all about the inside game with Johnson either. He has great touch from the outside. Overall, there isn’t a spot on the court where he can’t shoot the ball. Johnson is a threat from anywhere.

I love this commitment for the future of Illinois basketball. Johnson has tinges of someone like Chris Bosh. Illinois basketball just might have snagged a top 10 player for the first time in decades.
