Reality struck the Illinois football fanbase this past weekend when UTSA came to town and left with a victory.

It was a rough ending to the second game of the season for the Illini. After beating Nebraska, a nice non-conference win would have moved the program to 2-0. That didn’t happen and now we are sitting with a 1-1 record and staring at a solid Virginia team right in the face.

Illinois vs. Virginia odds for week 2

After falling to UTSA, despite being 5.5-point favorites, the Illini enter week two as an underdog. According to WynnBET, Illinois is starting the week off as a 10-point underdog to the Cavaliers.

On the over/under side of things, WynnBET is expecting some scoring in the game. The over/under for the Illinois versus Virginia game is 55 points.

As of right now, there are no moneyline odds on the game. I am sure that will come in the next couple of days, though.

Illinois injury report vs. Virginia for week 2

The big injury from this past week was Brandon Peters. He will, most likely, be ready to go against Virginia, but I am not sure if that is the best thing for the Illini. Art Sitkowski has thrown for 390 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions through two weeks.

Wide receiver Jafar Armstrong and running back Chase Hayden both could play this weekend but are questionable. Wide receiver Marquez Beason was dressed against UTSA, so I expect him to be eased back into action shortly. Wide receiver Brian Hightower isn’t playing, and both linebacker Calvin Hart and offensive lineman Jordyn Slaughter are out for the season.

Illinois vs. Virginia prediction for week 2

Let’s look at the over/under first. Seven out of 10 games Virginia played in 2020 went for over 55 points. They can score with just about any team in the country, but they were only 5-5 because their defense gave up a lot of points.

Illinois has an offense that can get stagnant at times, but they can also put up points in a hurry. The Illini secondary is the biggest weakness, and Virginia’s passing game is a strength. It is early in the week, but I would pound the over 55 points.

The spread of +10 is what is getting me. Illinois is going to compete in this game, I have no doubt about that. The Illini offense should be able to control the ball, as Bret Bielema is a very run-heavy head coach. With that in mind, I think Illinois will put up at least 20 points. That should be good enough to cover the 10-point spread. Take Illinois +10.
