3. Illinois’ defensive line was dominant

I truly believe the only reason Adrian Martinez had time in the pocket on certain plays was due to the fact Illinois’ defensive line was getting held the entire game.

The front of the Illinois defense was extremely impressive, and I believe Isaiah Gay led the way. He only finished with one total tackle on the day, but the box score doesn’t do him justice. The kid was a beast all day long.

I would argue Gay was the best defensive player for the Illini against Nebraska. He was able to penetrate the Nebraska offense with ease. His abilities made the Cornhuskers double team him at times, which helped free other Illinois defensive linemen to rush the quarterback.

Jer’Zhan Newton was statistically the best Illinois defensive lineman. He finished the game with 5 tackles, 2 quarterback hurries, 1 sack, and 1 tackle for loss. I was also impressed with players like Rod Perry who finished with 3 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 tackle for loss.

When it comes down to it, the main reason Illinois’ defense was so successful on Saturday was due to the fact the defensive line was crashing down on the Nebraska offense. They were quick off the snap. The schemes were flawless. I also think the play calling was on point. It was an all-around good game for the Illini.
