The 121st US Open is teeing off on Thursday, and the Illinois golf team has some former members looking to make their mark in one of the majors.

Illinois golf’s quest to secure a US Open title is on the shoulders of two former Illini players. Thomas Detry and Dylan Meyer lead the way for the Orange and Blue.

When do the two former Illinois golf members tee off?

  • Thomas Detry

Detry is set to tee off in the afternoon at 2:09 PST. He is paired with rising star, Sam Burns, and Chan Kim.

The young Belgium golfer has been playing pretty well on the European Tour this season. He is No. 51 in the Race to Dubai as of right now. In 10 tournaments, Detry has a second-place finish and two top 10s.

To get into the US Open, Detry finished in the top 10 in points earners from the Betfred British Masters hosted by Danny Willet, the Made in HimmerLand presented by FREJA and the Porsche European Open. This secured him the coveted tee time for the first round tomorrow.

This isn’t Detry’s first shot at the US Open, though. In 2020, he finished in a tie for 49th place at +17. After making the cut last year, Detry is looking to continue his great momentum and maybe even take home his first major.

  • Dylan Meyer

Meyer is an early tee time on Thursday, as he is going off at 8:46 PST. He will be joined by Luis Fernando Barco and Matt Sharpstene.

The road to the US Open was difficult for Meyer. He had to qualify on the local level at the Illini Country Club in Springfield, Illinois. He then took his talents to the final qualifier at Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ohio. After passing through both qualifiers, Meyer will tee it up with the best of the best in the world at Torrey Pines.

Much like Detry, this isn’t the first US Open appearance for Meyer. He qualified for the 2018 US Open and played extremely well. A four-round total of +11 was good enough to land Meyer in a tie for 20th place. He is now trying to duplicate that performance and cement his spot on the PGA Tour.
