4. Tre Mitchell

Illinois can kill two birds with one stone if they were able to land transfer, Tre Mitchell. He entered the transfer portal on March 15 and has had a ton of recruiting attention since.

Mitchell was a high-level recruit coming out of Woodstock Academy. He was rated as a four-star center who was ranked as the No. 84 player in the class of 2019. He was also the No. 21 center in the nation. Illinois liked this kid during his original recruitment as well.

Despite a ton of recruiting attention, Mitchell ended up with UMass and played well. As a freshman, he put up 17.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1 block and 1 steal per game. He increased those numbers to 18.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 steals per game as a sophomore. Now he is looking for a new home with two years of eligibility remaining.

Why does Illinois basketball have a shot?

As previously mentioned, Illinois could kill two birds with one stone here. Adam Miller will need to be replaced, so the Illini can just shift the lineup over and go bigger. We are also going to need a big man in the future, and Mitchell would help in this department as well.

Mitchell was also a prime target for the Illini during his original recruitment. The Illini visited him at his high school, and Orlando Antigua was the main recruiter. It wouldn’t shock me to see Coach Antigua back at Mitchell again. He is able to work wonders in the recruiting game.
