The Illinois football program is looking to continue its rebuild under a new regime, as the staff offered 2023’s, Marco Lainez.

Lainez is a 6-foot-2, 220-pound quarterback who hails from New Jersey and is currently rated as a three-star recruit for the 2023 class. 247Sports also lists him as a pro-style signal-caller.

One of Lainez’s most recent offers came from Illinois, as the Orange and Blue took notice of the young prospect on March 24. Lainez would take to Twitter to make the news official.

In addition to the Illini, Lainez has received looks from Iowa, Michigan State, and Pittsburgh, to name a few. He currently attends The Hun School and enjoyed a successful sophomore campaign as the Raiders’ quarterback in 2020. Victories included a 68-0 win against the Kisiki School on opening day, along with a three-point win against Wyoming Seminary College Prep, 16-13.

Lainez seems to have refined his quarterback mechanics during the offseason, which should lead to a sign of great things to come upon entering his upperclassmen years.

What would Marco Lainez bring to the Illinois football team?

Lainez is exactly who Illinois should be looking to build the program around. Similar to recent signee, Donovan Leary, both men reside from New Jersey and have tremendous upside as multi-star recruits and pro-style quarterback abilities. The East Coast has been difficult for the Illini to deliver in the past, but with a new regime, times appear to be changing.

Check out Lainez’s sophomore highlight tape below, as he showcases his ability to throw the ball in tight spots and keep plays alive when needed.

At the moment, it is unclear where Lainez will ultimately lean towards, but it is apparent that the soon-to-be junior will have an opportunity to turn The Hun into a state title contender in the years to come.

For now, though, the recruiting surge continues to roll on with spring football in full swing.
