The Illinois football secondary will continue to improve as more talented players arrive in Champaign.

Illinois was able to pull in a few players for the secondary from the class of 2021. Daniel Edwards was one of those players who committed to the Illini back on May 21. Edwards has now officially signed onto the Illinois program to be their future cornerback.

Edwards is a 5-foot-11, 155-pound cornerback from Winter Park High School and resides in Winter Park, Florida. He is rated as a three-star recruit, the No. 1017 player in the class of 2021 and the No. 88 cornerback in the nation. He is also the No. 130 player in the state of Florida.

Breakdown of Edwards’ impact on Illinois

The Illinois secondary is going to take a hit after the 2020 campaign. We are losing cornerback Nate Hobbs, who was one of the stalwarts on the Illini defense for the past four years. His departure is going to hurt depth in the secondary.

I love that Illinois has Marquez Beason returning to play cornerback in 2021. His presence is going to give the Illini defense some validity. But there is just not enough depth in the Illinois secondary right now.

Adding Edwards will help with the depth issues. He should be able to come in and compete for snaps from day one. That has a lot to do with his talent, but it also has to do with the lack of talent in the secondary.

Keep an eye out for Edwards to be on the field in the fall of 2021. This kid has a lot of talent and should make an impact immediately. I see him as a three-year starter for this program.
