Illinois basketball is continuing to build for the future, as the program hosted Compass Prep’s Tyty Washington for an on-campus visit on October 29.

Washington, a four-star point guard and recent transfer from Cesar Chavez High School to Compass Prep High School in Chandler, Arizona, has seen primary interest from the Orange and Blue as of late.

Brad Underwood and Company are trying to lock-in the 2021 class and adding Washington would be critical for long-term success. Illinois missed out on Fenwick’s Bryce Hopkins last week, as he chose Kentucky.

According to a tweet from Jake Weingarten of Stockrisers, Illinois hosted a virtual visit with  Mustapha Amzil on October 29, and on the same day, hosted Washington for an on-campus visit, though he had “no coach interaction.” The 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior looks to start fresh and finish his high school basketball career with an elite program.

Including the Illini, Washington is getting looks from Arizona State, Creighton, Auburn, and LSU, as he will enter his senior season in late-November.

Washington’s new team enjoyed great success during the 2019-2020 season, as the Dragons finished 24-6 overall and 10-3 in conference play. They fell to Glenview College Prep in its third-round playoff game, 72-68. Out of the Dragons’ six losses, one of them was to Prolific Prep (75-67), who featured current Illini freshman Coleman Hawkins, along with NBA G-League standout, Jalen Green.

What would Tyty Washington bring to Champaign?

Despite switching schools, Washington has shown that he can perform at a high level throughout his career so far.

Over the summer and even with a pandemic, Washington demonstrated his ability to take over a game at any time. This was no more evident than when Chandler Prep played in the Pangos Invite, and in one game, Washington scored 50 points. His performance likely captured the attention of college coaches from around the country.

Illinois fans should be excited that a dynamic scorer is on its radar, and with a stellar senior season ahead, Washington’s recruitment will start to heat up and create more buzz.
