Some of the most legendary Illinois basketball players have suited up at the shooting guard role for the program.
Players like Jerry Colangelo were getting buckets in the 1960s. Audie Matthews dominated the 1970s with his great play. Nick Anderson helped lead the Illini in the 1980s to the Final Four. Luther Head was a pivotal piece to the Illini run to the national title in the 2000s.
There have been so many legends who have played the No. 2 guard spot. The line of legends isn’t ending anytime soon either. Illinois currently has some great shooting guards donning the Orange and Blue. The future of the position looks good too. And then you have to see what we have potentially coming in down the road.
Honestly, the shooting guard role on the team is one of the most important. This position has to help facilitate the ball and be a distraction with the threat of shooting. They space the floor well because of their threat to hit a shot from anywhere on the court. That is why having at least one talented shooting guard on the team is so extremely important.
Here is the outlook at shooting guard for the Illini.
