Illinois basketball is in the midst of an upswing with the program and it all starts on the ground with recruiting.
Trent Frazier was brought in. Ayo Dosunmu followed Frazier with Kofi Cockburn not far behind. These players, among others, were the foundation for future success of the program. Brad Underwood and the Illini coaching staff need to continue building. Brandon Weston is a player who could help the cause.
Back on August 17, Weston announced his top six teams which included Seton Hall, Western Illinois, Michigan, Wake Forest, Pittsburgh and Illinois. This is a talented top six, but a decision was the bigger question. When was this going to take place?
Weston answered that question on Tuesday when he posted on Twitter that he will be making a decision on where he will attend school on September 1. This decision will affect one of these six programs for years to come.
Where does Illinois stand among the top six?
Well, as of August 26, there are four 247Sports “experts” who think Weston is heading to Seton Hall. Three out of the four have him at an eight out of 10 confidence and the other person is at a nine out of 10.
This news doesn’t bode well for the Orange and Blue. When that many people, including Brian Snow who is the national basketball analyst, has a player going to one school, that usually means it will happen.
But I wouldn’t doubt the power of Illinois’ coaching staff. Chin Coleman can pull in the talented players. Honestly, if we lose out to Seton Hall for Weston’s commitment, it is going to hurt. We would then need to find a replacement for him moving forward.
Obviously, it looks like Seton Hall is the landing spot here. I would say they have a lead followed by Illinois and then Michigan. This race isn’t over until Weston makes a decision on September 1, though.
