The Illinois football team moved one step closer to landing another big-time recruit on Sunday morning.

Over the last few years, the Illini have really developed a solid recruiting presence in the state of Texas. Players like Calvin Avery and Marquez Beason, to name a few, have picked the Orange and Blue and will be huge pieces on this team. The next big recruit Illinois could pull in from the Lone Star State could be Cameron Bonner.

Bonner is a 5-foot-11, 173-pound wide receiver from St. Thomas High School and resides in Houston, Texas. He is rated as a three-star recruit who is the No. 640 player in the class of 2021 and the No. 102 wide receiver in the nation. He is also the No. 90 player in the state of Texas.

On Sunday, Bonner decided to trim down his recruitment. He ended up cutting his list down to just six teams and kept Arizona, Utah, Texas A&M, Houston, Pittsburgh and Illinois alive for his commitment. Whoever lands this kid is going to be getting a star wide receiver.

If you look up the definition of a burner, you will find Bonner’s picture. This kid is someone who can take the top off a defense. But I believe he is more than that. The route running ability is solid. His cuts are so crisp. I would love to see what this kid could do with Isaiah Williams at quarterback. Illinois’ offense would be out of this world.

Where would Bonner fit in on the Illinois roster?

It wouldn’t shock me to see Bonner come in and make an immediate impact on the Illini in year one. This kid has the talent to play snaps from the start. I don’t think he would get a starting job, though.

Brian Hightower, Donny Navarro and Casey Washington are my projected top three wide receivers. Illinois has solid but unproven backups behind those three, though. This is where Bonner would have the greatest chance to insert himself on the depth chart.

Illinois is getting closer to landing Bonner. He would be a great addition to a building program. The Illini offense would be fun to watch with this kid out wide.
