Illini fans needed some good news and that is what they received with a big commitment on Monday afternoon.

The last 24 hours have been kind of rough for Illinois football fans, and really fans of the Big Ten, after the conference canceled the 2020 season. But that didn’t stop the Illinois coaching staff from landing a top 1000 player in the class of 2021.

Chevy Brenson scheduled his commitment date and time a few days ago and has made a decision. He has decided to end his recruitment and commit to the University of Illinois. The talented wide receiver picked the Illini over Memphis, Kansas State, Toledo, Ball State and Colorado State.

Brenson is a 6-foot-4, 195-pound wide receiver from Christian Brothers College High School and resides in O’Fallon, Missouri. He is rated as a three-star recruit who is the No. 930 player in the class of 2021 and the No. 140 wide receiver in the nation. He is also the No. 17 player in the state of Missouri.

This decision isn’t much of a surprise to Illinois fans as 247Sports has had their Crystal Ball predictions point to the Orange and Blue for a few weeks now. So, the announcement is something that brings a sense of relief to the program.

I am not quite sure why more teams weren’t vying for Brenson’s services. This kid is extremely impressive on the football field. His height sets him apart from a lot of pass catchers. But I also love his physicality. The kid can fight for the ball. He is going to be an amazingly big target for Illinois quarterbacks.

Where does Brenson fit in on the Illinois roster?

I could see Brenson coming in and making an immediate impact on the Illinois football team. We don’t have someone with his size out wide, which would help the team tremendously.

I see the starters for 2021 being Brian Hightower, Donny Navarro and Casey Washington, but behind them is up for grabs. Illinois doesn’t have proven depth at the position. It wouldn’t shock me to see Brenson come in and compete for a primary backup job from day one.
