Illinois Basketball: 4 stats to watch for Illini G Ayo Dosunmu
1. Field goal percentage
The development of Ayo Dosunmu from year one to year two is really impressive. The kid grew in various statistical categories. One area that showed great improvement was his field goal percentage.
It was a rough first year for Ayo as he only shot 43.5-percent from the field while attempting 11.7 field goals per game. From an outside perspective, it seemed that he was forcing shots while trying to find his flow at the college level.
In seven out of Ayo’s first 11 games with the Illini, he managed to shoot under 40-percent from the field. The efficiency was not there on the offensive end early on. But that quickly changed when Ayo flipped over to his sophomore season.
During the entire 30 games Ayo played in last season, he managed to only have seven contests where he shot under 40-percent from the field. He was able to increase his field goal completion rate by nearly five points to 48.4-percent as well.
The work Ayo put in during the offseason between his freshman and sophomore season is impressive. It showed on the court in year two. He has now had an opportunity to get evaluated by NBA scouts and has another offseason under his belt. Just imagine the numbers he is going to put up as a junior.
