The Illinois football team is in the hunt for a variety of recruits in the class of 2021.

As of right now, the Illini have 10 players committed for 2021. We have a national ranking of No. 61 and that continues to improve as the weeks go on. This isn’t even counting in both Brian Hightower (WR) and Brevyn Jones (OL) being eligible to play after sitting out a transfer year either. The class is building into a special group of players, but we need more talent. That is why I am excited about being in the running for Cameron Bonner.

Bonner is a 5-foot-11, 173-pound wide receiver from St. Thomas High School and resides in Houston, Texas. He is rated as a three-star recruit who is the No. 637 player in the class of 2021 and the No. 103 wide receiver in the nation. He is also the No. 90 player in the state of Texas.

The recruitment of Bonner seems to be narrowing as 247Sports has three teams as “warm” for the talented pass catcher. The three teams in the running right now include Baylor, Houston and Illinois.

Are you surprised to see Illinois in the running for a solid wide receiver from the Lone Star State? You shouldn’t be. Wide receivers coach Andrew Hayes-Stoker is the main recruiter, and he has been able to do wonders down in Texas.

Illinois has also been in a lot of contact with Bonner. They originally offered him a scholarship back in April and, on Wednesday, Bonner did a virtual visit with Illinois. He posted on his Twitter account that he had a great virtual visit along with a graphic.

It is great Illinois is right in the mix for a top 700 player like Bonner. Heading into 2021, there will be a lot of unproven talent at wide receiver for the Orange and Blue. The No. 1 should be Hightower. I then have Donny Navarro and Casey Washington starting as well. Behind the starters are talented, but unproven, wide receivers.

The Illini have a chance at bringing in one of the best wide receiver classes we have seen in a while if Bonner picks Champaign as his landing spot. Illinois has already snagged Pat Bryant and Theodore Lockley for 2021. Those two, Bonner and Hightower all coming in will give Isaiah Williams so many great targets.

I feel like we are so close to landing Bonner. Illinois coaches have done a great job keeping up with Texas teams for a state of Texas recruit. Let’s just finish this race in first place.
