Illinois Basketball: Rerating every Illini recruit from the 2010s
6. Alan Griffin (Old: 3-star/0.9038 – New: 4-star/0.9685)
The Illinois class of 2018 was extremely top-heavy on paper. They were led by Ayo Dosunmu, who was the only top 100 player in the class. But there was talent that was hidden within this group of players. One of the underrated players from this class was Alan Griffin.
Griffin was a 6-foot-5, 180-pound shooting guard coming out of Archbishop Stepinac High School and residing in White Plains, New York. He was rated as a three-star recruit who was the No. 185 player in the class of 2018 and the No. 41 shooting guard in the nation. He also had a composite rating of 0.9038.
I believe you could tell that Griffin was going to be a good player from day one. He didn’t get much action as a freshman, though. He only averaged 2.8 points and 1.6 rebounds per game in year one. It didn’t take long for him to break out as a sophomore, though.
Griffin’s second season with Illinois was wildly successful. The talented guard averaged 8.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest. He was also hitting his three-point shots at a clip of 41.6-percent, which is absolutely ridiculous.
Sadly, Griffin didn’t see a path for his career at Illinois. After two seasons with the Illini, he entered his name into the transfer portal. The announcement of him committing to Syracuse came shortly after. I would say this departure is up there with the most painful in recent memory.
Griffin entered the Illinois program as an under the radar recruit. He was a three-star with a rating of 0.9038. That number deserves a massive adjustment to a four-star with a rating of 0.9685. This kid is going to be really good with the Orangemen.
