The Illinois basketball team continues its pursuit of local in-state talent, as they offer Fenwick guard, Trey Pettigrew.

College coaches now have the ability to contact potential 2022 hopefuls. One of Brad Underwood’s four in-state prospects, Fenwick combo guard Trey Pettigrew, might be one to watch and may end up at Illinois.

Pettigrew is listed at 6-foot-3, 175 pounds, and comes from a program that has produced the likes of Duke commit D.J. Steward (before transferring to Whitney Young), and Louisville commit Bryce Hopkins.

Last season, Pettigrew turned some heads, averaging 16 points and three assists per game while also contributing 36 minutes of game time. His most impressive outing was a 33-point game during the Chicago Elite Classic in December 2019, showing that he has a developing clutch gene. The Friars finished 26-7, while also turning in an 11-3 campaign in league play.

How would Pettigrew fit as part of Underwood’s system?

Pettigrew has shown that he can play multiple positions at one time, making him a well-rounded player who has a lot of room to grow. He and Andre Curbelo could be valuable assets at those key positions since Trent Frazier and Austin Hutcherson will have departed from the program by then.

Pettigrew’s biggest strength is his ball-handling ability and efficient shooting accuracy. All of these qualities could pay huge dividends as the year’s progress.

Illinois’ current state heading into November has high expectations.

Illinois is in a really unique position. They are coming off of its best season in 15 years and have a bright future ahead with its incoming 2020 class, which includes Adam Miller, Coleman Hawkins, and Curbelo. All of whom are three of the most highly anticipated prospects that Champaign has seen, which makes an NCAA tournament and Big Ten title run that much more plausible.
