Illinois Basketball: Projected Illini lineup if Charles Bediako was added
No. 5 Center
Starter: Charles Bediako
That brings me to the No. 5 spot on the team. This is a position that I had Giorgi Bezhanishvili playing because Kofi Cockburn will have departed, but snagging Charles Bediako would change everything. I would immediately change the lineup if he picks the Illini.
I have Bediako coming in as a true freshman and starting right away for the Illini. He has the size at 6-foot-11 to be a dominant player in the Big Ten. Illinois would also have a huge need for him too. If the young big man wants playing time and a chance at the NBA, Illinois would probably be his best option.
Backup: Coleman Hawkins
I am excited to see what incoming freshman Coleman Hawkins can do this upcoming season. I believe he is going to come in and put up solid numbers for the Illini. His development this year is going to be crucial for the 2021 campaign.
I have Hawkins as the primary backup at the No. 5 spot for Illinois in 2021. He should be able to spell minutes for Bediako and even come in at the No. 4 spot at times if needed. Hawkins is going to be a utility player. Illinois can use this kid for his size, but he can also score well. I can’t wait to see what he can do.
Backup: Jermaine Hamlin
Depth is a big deal for the Illini, and Jermaine Hamlin is someone who can solidify the No. 5 spot. Hamlin wasn’t asked to do too much his freshman season, but he was able to come in for Kofi Cockburn so he could rest.
I see Hamlin playing a similar role by his junior year in 2021. He is going to be asked to play few minutes but be engaged in those minutes. He gives me comfort at the No. 5 spot.
