Illinois Football: Jamari Gassett keeps Illini in top 5
The Illinois football team has made some waves in the recruiting world the last few weeks, and they continue to be a presence in a lot of player’s minds.
Playmakers are something that Illinois is always looking for. During the previous coaching regime, we lacked the playmaking ability. That has started to change and continues to develop with the coaching staff we have today. The Illini are also one step closer to adding another playmaker in Jamari Gassett.
Gassett is a 5-foot-10, 170-pound wide receiver from Jefferson High School and resides in Tampa, Florida. He isn’t rated or ranked by 247Sports, but Rivals has him as a three-star recruit with a rating of 5.5.
There were plenty of schools interested in Gassett. He had roughly 18 scholarship offers with some of the bigger ones coming from teams like Illinois, Boston College and Iowa State. But Gassett has decided to narrow the options down a bit. He cut his list down to just five teams on Sunday afternoon.
The five teams who made Gassett’s list include the likes of Buffalo, Toledo, Rutgers, Boston College and Illinois. The big question remains; which team will come out on top?
Rivals currently has Boston College as the predicted winner of the Gassett recruitment. While they are a good program, Illinois does have strong ties to the state of Florida and they have recruited well out of there too.
Illinois coach Keynodo Hudson is the main recruiter for Gassett. He came into the Illini program last season after being at Florida Atlantic. So, his connections to the Sunshine State are strong.
The Illini roster is also made up of a lot of Florida players. We currently have 17 players who reside in the state of Florida. That is an impressive haul from a talent-rich part of the country.
It would not shock me to see Illinois come out of this recruitment with a victory. I think our coaching staff can pull Gassett into the program. He would be a great addition and someone who can make plays in the future.
