The Illinois football coaching staff has been tweeting about landing players the last couple of days and the first domino has dropped.
On Thursday afternoon, Trevor Moffitt took to Twitter to announce that he has committed to the University of Illinois. This was a solid commitment for the Illini and one that will improve the defense down the road.
Moffitt is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound outside linebacker from South Sumter High School and resides in Bushnell, Florida. He is rated as a three-star recruit who is the No. 103 outside linebacker in the class of 2021 and the No. 172 player in the state of Florida.
The Illini have been after Moffitt for a few months now. They came in with an offer to the young linebacker back in March, but since then, his recruitment has exploded. Teams like Appalachian State, South Florida and Temple have all come in with offers. But the Illini ended up winning out.
Why did Moffitt pick the Orange and Blue, though?
“They made me feel so at home and wanted. On top of that, they have an amazing coaching staff and facilities.”
Illinois’ coaching staff was able to reel in Moffitt and continue to build the defense for the future. Where does Moffitt fit in with the Illini roster right now?
I think it is safe to assume that Moffitt will be redshirted year one. He needs time to get acclimated to the college game. He can do that by being in the weight room and developing a knowledge of the college game. By his redshirt freshman year, I see him getting playing time.
Illinois needed more depth at linebacker for the future. Shammond Cooper should lead the way, but there isn’t a ton of depth behind the starters. Moffitt will help add to the potential of this linebacker corps.
I love this addition for the Orange and Blue. We could always use more linebackers on the roster. Lovie Smith also knows linebackers. This seems like a marriage made in heaven.
