The Illinois football team received some great news on Wednesday night from one of their biggest targets for the class of 2021.

Lovie Smith and the Illini coaching staff continue to pull in solid players. They have signed a nice balance of offense and defense over the last few classes. This staff has brought in some serious playmakers as well. Illinois is looking to add another playmaker in Demetrius Cannon.

Cannon is a 6-foot-3, 205-pound wide receiver from Trinity Catholic High School and resides in St. Louis, Missouri. He is rated as a three-star recruit who is the No. 471 player in the class of 2021 and the No. 78 wide receiver in the nation. He is also the No. 6 player in the state of Missouri.

On Wednesday night, Cannon decided to cut his list down to just 10 teams that will recruit the young pass catcher. The 10 programs that made the list include West Virginia, Indiana, Vanderbilt, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Penn State, Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois.

Honestly, it is hard to tell who is in the lead for Cannon. There are a lot of great programs on this list. If I had to guess, I would say Missouri, Penn State and Illinois are the top three right now. But that is just speculation.

Illinois could really use a player like Cannon on the outside. His size at 6-foot-3, 205-pounds is something that doesn’t come around often. I think he would be the No. 1 option for Isaiah Williams come 2021. This would be a good tandem, and both played at Trinity Catholic as well. The Williams to Cannon connection is something I could get used to.

The depth chart for the Illini needs this commitment too. I like what we have in Brian Hightower and Casey Washington. Donny Navarro is a rising player who could do some damage. Behind those three are a bunch of talented, but unproven, wide receivers. There would be plenty of opportunities for Cannon to come in and, potentially, see starts in year one.

Making the top 10 for Cannon is exciting. Hopefully, the Illini coaching staff continues making him a priority and we can pull in the top 500 recruit. The team that ends up snagging this kid is getting a good one.
