The transfer market is starting to dry up for the Illinois basketball team, but they aren’t done eyeing certain players who could help the program.

There is a chance the Illini are losing a lot of talent this offseason. The departure of Andres Feliz, Alan Griffin and Tevian Jones hurts the depth of this team. But there is also the possibility we lose Kofi Cockburn and Ayo Dosunmu as well. Illinois will need to replace some of this scoring. That is why we are pursuing Trevor Lakes.

Lakes is a 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward who just finished up his junior year at the University of Indianapolis. The U of Indy is a DII program that has played well over the past few years. Lakes has been a big reason for their success.

This past season with the Greyhounds, Lakes was sensational. He finished the year averaging 15.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Those are good numbers, but what impresses me the most is his shooting ability. He was 44.4-percent from the field and 39.8-percent from three-point range.

You can break Lakes’ numbers down even more. His 39.8-percent shooting from distance is impressive, but the fact he was shooting 8.4 three-point shots per game makes it even more impressive. This kid is a serious threat to put up big numbers at the next level.

Honestly, I have worried about Illinois and what they are doing this offseason. If they can land someone like Lakes, then I think everything should be fine. Plus, this kid plays a position that is needed on the team.

I see Lakes coming in and probably coming off the bench to start his final year of college. It wouldn’t shock me to see him starting eventually. He would be a great No. 4 for the Illini. He has solid size, but he can also pull players to the perimeter.

Next. Projected Illini lineup without Kofi Cockburn. dark

Illinois has missed out on a lot of transfers this offseason. I believe Lakes would be a great pick up for a team that needs shooting and size. Let’s get him and keep filling out this roster.
