Illinois Basketball: 3 observations from the Illini loss to Ohio State
3. It is time for Trent to stop shooting
Let me preface this by saying that I think Trent Frazier is a good dude who has a lot of talent. I have seen him be a No. 1 for this team, and he was sensational during this time. With that being said, I think it is time for him to stop shooting as much.
Frazier has not been good at shooting the ball. I usually say that shooters shoot, so Frazier needs to be shooting. That is not the case anymore. I think he needs to pull back on his shooting. His inability to make shots is killing this team.
On Thursday night, Frazier couldn’t hit shots against Ohio State. He was 3-of-10 from the field and 1-of-6 from three-point range for a total of eight points. Those aren’t good numbers. But, sadly, this isn’t anything new. This has become a trend with him.
Just in the last 10 games for Frazier, he is shooting 24-of-97 from the field. That comes out to 24.7-percent shooting from the field. That is a really bad number. His three-point shooting has been even worse. He is only 12-of-56 from long range, which is 21.4-percent.
Those shooting numbers are unacceptable. If a player goes on a streak of a couple of games like this, it is a funk. But Frazier has now had 10 straight games of averaging these numbers. We can’t have this anymore. The team is hurting because of his shooting. The record for the Illini during this stretch is 5-5. Frazier needs to be better.
