The Illinois football team was busy this past week with giving out scholarships to players who could help this program in the near future.

Developing our secondary is going to be important moving forward. We have some solid players at cornerback and safety right now, but we don’t have enough depth. Building that depth is what this Illini coaching staff needs to focus on. That is why offering Brandon Calloway is a great move.

Calloway is a 6-foot-2, 175-pound cornerback from Griffin High School and resides in Griffin, Georgia. He isn’t rated or ranked by 247Sports, but their full class of 2021 rankings aren’t out yet. I would imagine this kid is going to continue to garner attention, and he will be ranked within the next couple of months.

Illinois isn’t the first team to offer Calloway a scholarship, though. The Purdue Boilermakers snuck in a week before the Illini and handed him an offer. But these are the only two programs to see this kids’ true potential. I believe he is going to be a solid player at the next level too.

There are a lot of great attributes that Calloway brings to the table, but the main thing that sticks out to me is his footwork. You can tell this kid has been taught well about his footwork and where to turn. That is important because if your feet turn the wrong way, you are going to get burnt by the wide receiver. It is fun to watch this kid work.

I also want to point out the speed Calloway brings to the table. He can keep up with any player on the field. He also closes on the ball well. These are two things that will help him greatly at the next level.

Calloway is a good player who has the potential to be great. I am excited the Illini offered him a scholarship. This kid could come into the program and be an impact player day one.
