The Illinois football team extended another scholarship offer on Tuesday afternoon.

Illinois’ secondary is an area that I worry about moving forward. We could be kind of thin in the defensive backfield this upcoming season, but the proceeding years are what concern me the most. That is why snagging someone like Isaac Thompson would be good for the program.

Thompson is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound cornerback from St. Louis University High School and resides in St. Louis, Missouri. He isn’t rated or ranked yet because he is from the class of 2022. 247Sports hasn’t released their full rankings just yet. But I believe Thompson would check-in somewhere around No. 400 right now based on his scholarship offers.

It looks like Thompson has around 10 scholarship offers with a lot more to come in over the next couple of years. Some of the bigger programs to offer him, in addition to Illinois, include Arkansas, USC and Oklahoma State.

The first thing I like about Thompson is his size. He just finished up his sophomore season and he is already 6-foot-1. That is a great thing to see. I wouldn’t be shocked if he grows to be around 6-foot-3.

I loved Thompson’s speed and closing ability as well. He can keep up with any wide receiver no matter the route they run. This is huge as a defensive back. The closing ability is impressive too. He can fly to the offensive player on screens and short routes.

Next. Floor and ceiling for the Illini the rest of the way. dark

Thompson is going to have a ton of scholarship offers by the time he makes his decision. Thankfully, Illinois has a great pull in the St. Louis area. I wouldn’t be shocked to see this kid come to Champaign. But there is a lot of time left. Let’s see how this one plays out over the coming years.
