Building out the wide receiver corps is something the Illinois football team is clearly looking to do in the near future.
Sometimes recruiting sites get it right. Sometimes they are way off. And then there are times where recruiting sites can be so divided. That is the case with Illini target, Devin Chandler. This kid is rising when it comes to recruiting attention, but there are issues with his recruiting ranking.
Chandler is a 6-foot, 171-pound wide receiver from William Amos Hough High School in Cornelius, North Carolina. He is rated as a three-star recruit who is the No. 972 player in the class of 2020 and the No. 148 wide receiver in the nation. He is also the No. 36 player in the state of North Carolina.
Those numbers above are according to 247Sports. They also do a composite which, I believe, is a combination of other recruiting sites and then they average it out. So, according to the composite, Chandler is ranked as the No. 2081 player in the class of 2020 and the No. 271 wide receiver in the nation.
These two rankings are completely different from one another, but I believe the regular 247Sports ranking is way closer to what Chandler should be ranked. My determination of that is based on his scholarship offers. Some of the bigger programs to come in with offers so far include North Carolina State, Virginia and Illinois. I am sure there are more to come, though. This kid has some serious talent.
I am confused about how this kid isn’t a consensus top 1000 player among all recruiting sites. I want him on the Illini football team. The first thing that stands out to me is the fact he is a burner. Chandler can just fly on the football field. He is also a solid route runner. His ability to run crisp routes enables him to get open. He can also high-point the ball, which is a special attribute to have.
I think the Illini can get some traction with Chandler. There aren’t a lot of offers yet, so they can build that relationship with him now. This kid is going to be a steal for a program in the class of 2020.
