The Illinois football team opens up their 2019 campaign against the Akron Zips on Saturday.

Illinois’ exact depth chart hasn’t been released and we probably won’t know until the team actually trots out there onto the field. But most positions seem to be pretty much set. Also, note that Marquez Beason and Sydney Brown aren’t on here because of injuries.

Here is the projected Illini depth chart against Akron.

Quarterback

Starter: Brandon Peters

The starter for the 2019 campaign has already been announced. When Brandon Peters transferred in from Michigan, most fans kind of already knew he was going to be the starter for this program.

Having Peters as the starter for the Illini is comforting. We have stability at a position that hasn’t been the most stable for the Orange and Blue. I look for him to have a quick start and be out of the game by halftime because of the scoreboard.

Backup: Isaiah Williams

Thankfully, the NCAA rules now allow players to play the first four games of the season and then take a redshirt. This rule should be used toward Isaiah Williams.

I have Williams slotted in as the backup for the first four games. After that, he should be redshirted. I see him coming in during the second half of the game against Akron and showing off his arm and wheels.

Backup: Matt Robinson

Matt Robinson will eventually slide into that primary backup role after week four, but for now, I have him as the third-string passer. He is a good player who was talked about a lot last season as potentially becoming the starter. Robinson provides solid depth for this program.
