Redshirt: CJ Dixon

If Illinois didn’t have nice depth and they couldn’t afford to redshirt a player, I would have incoming freshman quarterback CJ Dixon as potentially the backup to Peters. But the depth is great on this team, so I would have the Illini redshirting Dixon in 2020.

Dixon is a 6-foot-5, 210-pound pro-style quarterback from Grayson High School in Loganville, Georgia. He is rated as a four-star recruit who is the No. 285 player in the class of 2020 and the No. 16 pro-style quarterback in the nation. He is also the No. 28 player in the state of Georgia.

Illinois was able to land Dixon over the weekend. He participated in the annual Grill on the Grove get together that the Orange and Blue coaching staff hosts. This is a great recruiting experience that usually lands a recruit or two. I wouldn’t be shocked if we get another commitment within the next 24 hours.

Dixon liked the school so much, he decided to commit to the Illini. This was a huge get for the program. I think Dixon comes in year one and does take a redshirt. Illinois has Peters and Williams in place to stabilize the quarterback position for a few seasons.

After Dixon redshirts in 2020, he would then come in as a redshirt freshman and compete with Williams for the starting job. At worst, he is a starter for this program by his redshirt junior campaign. He is going to be a superstar for this team.
