Fourth-String: Matt Robinson
The depth for the Illinois football team continues to be impressive as we get down to the fourth-string quarterback on the roster. I have this role going to Matt Robinson.
Robinson was a three-star dual-threat quarterback coming out of J Serra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, California. He was ranked as the No. 2236 player in the class of 2018 and the No. 56 dual-threat quarterback in the nation. He was also the No. 239 player in the state of California.
Illinois took advantage of the new NCAA rule where you could play the first four games of the season and still take a redshirt with no questions asked. This is what Robinson did during his freshman season in 2018. He only played in three games but was 3-of-6 for 11 yards and had 24 yards on the ground.
It seems like the last two offseasons, people have talked about the potential of Robinson and how he could win the starting job. But that hasn’t come to fruition yet. I love the kids game, but I think he is going to be the fourth-string quarterback for the Illini in 2020. He was a great find by the Illini coaching staff and a nice depth piece moving forward.
