The Illinois football team is going to have a solid offensive line for the next couple of years.

Phifer Griffin is a nice addition to this crew. He committed to the Illini class of 2020 on Sunday. I was starting to worry about the depth of the offensive line because, behind the starters, there isn’t a lot of quality and/or experience. That is going to start changing with Griffin, though.

Here is what the Illini offensive line will look like with Griffin.

Left tackle

Starter: Vederian Lowe (SR)

I have senior Vederian Lowe stepping into the starting left tackle role in 2020. I believe the only reason he isn’t going to start in 2019 is that Richie Petitbon is coming in and taking over the spot for a season. Lowe started every game in 2018 and should be starting every game in 2020.

Backup: Jordyn Slaughter (SO)

Illinois had the luxury of being able to redshirt Jordyn Slaughter last season. This kid came in as a three-star recruit who was the No. 971 player in the class of 2018. The fact he has been able to get bigger, faster and strong over the last year is exciting. I think he is going to be a solid backup or even a starter in 2020.

Backup: Kurt Gavin (SR)

Illinois also has Kurt Gavin. He is another offensive lineman who hasn’t played much. He has only played in two games since joining the program. I don’t expect Gavin to get any snaps in 2020 but is a solid senior leader for this team.
