Illinois Football: 5 offensive line targets left for 2020
2. Phifer Griffin
There are always under the radar recruits who shoot up the recruiting site rankings. Phifer Griffin continues to climb those rankings and is turning into a big target for the Orange and Blue.
Griffin is a 6-foot-6, 290-pound offensive tackle from Union Academy in Monroe, North Carolina. He is rated as a three-star recruit who is the No. 877 player in the class of 2020 and the No.76 offensive tackle in the nation. He is also the No. 32 player in North Carolina as well.
Back in early April, Illinois came in with an offer to Griffin. His recruitment has started to pick up some more steam since then. He currently holds some big-time offers like West Virginia, Marshall and East Carolina. He also took an unofficial visit to Illinois back in mid-June as well. This indicates that the interest is mutual between the Illini staff and Griffin.
In an article by Jeremy Werner of 247Sports, Griffin said he didn’t have any favorites at the time and that he was planning on making a decision sometime during his senior year. This was about three weeks ago, so I assume nothing has changed from that.
I want to add more offensive linemen and it seems Griffin could be a great option. Much like Kevin Tyler, Griffin could see some early playing time due to departures on the team and unproven talent.
