The defensive secondary is a big focus for the Illinois football team right now.

This program needs to build up their cornerbacks and safeties so we can prevent opposing quarterbacks from throwing all over us. Snagging Marquez Beason in the class of 2019 is going to go a long way in helping with this problem. But we need to find a few more big-time playmakers like Beason for the future. Tar’varish Dawson could be one of those players.

Dawson is a 5-foot-10, 154-pound cornerback from Lehigh Senior High School in Lehigh Acres, Florida. He isn’t rated or ranked by 247Sports because he is from the class of 2021, but this kid is going to end up being ranked in the top 300 from what I can tell he brings to the field and the scholarships he is already piling up.

On Sunday, Dawson took to Twitter to announce that he had received his first scholarship offer. The team that he received this offer from was The University of Illinois. While Illinois was the first team to offer him a scholarship they weren’t the last. Over the past few days, he has also received an offer from both Maryland and Miami (FL) as well. These are three big-time offers and I am sure more are to come.

At the college level, athleticism usually wins out. If you put the best athletes on the field, you are usually going to win the football game. Getting someone like Dawson to come to Illinois will help the Illini put better athletes on the field. This kid is a pure burner and would scorch the Big Ten.

I love the speed Dawson brings to the table. I think he is going to be dangerous purely based on his speed. He also has solid hands and good field vision. This would make him tough as a defensive back. I also think he would make for a good slot receiver and returner as well.

Illinois hasn’t consistently had the level of athlete that Dawson is in a long time. He would help bring more of that talent to Champaign. It is great that the Illini were first to offer this kid.
