The men’s Illinois golf team continued their great run of success this weekend by taking down another title.
For the fifth time in the last five years, the Illini have won the Big Ten Championship. This is an impressive feat that programs can only dream of. Despite losing two big members of this program heading into this season, Dylan Meyer and Nick Hardy, the Illini have found the right combination of players to continue their dynastic success.
Illinois won the Big Ten Championship with a +28 total score. Purdue finished in second place at +33 and Michigan State was in third at +43. This wasn’t an easy accomplishment, though. Heading into the final round, the Illini were tied in the lead at +30 with Minnesota. The Golden Gophers had a really bad day, but the Illini shot a final round -2 to take home the title.
The Illini played well, pretty much, across the board. The best player for the Orange and Blue in this tournament was freshman Adrien Dumont de Chassart. He was playing some solid golf throughout the tournament and was +6 heading into the final day. Dumont de Chassart threw up a -4, 66, in the final round to win the tournament and take home a share of medalist honors.
Giovanni Tadiotto put up a low score in round three as well. He shot a -2, 68, to have a three-round total of +6 for the tournament. That was good enough to earn him 7th place. Varun Chopra had the next best score for the Illini at +10. He finished in a tie for 11th place.
Michael Feagles was right behind Chopra on the leaderboard. He had a good final round of -1, 69, and a three-round total of +11. This was good enough for a tie for 16th place. Bryan Baumgarten also competed as well. He didn’t have a great tournament, finishing at +28, but the team was there to pick him up and that is what is most important.
Winning the Big Ten Championship is a huge confidence booster heading into the NCAA regional here in a couple of weeks. Illinois is playing well and they need to carry that momentum into the regional. I think we have enough talent to get back to the NCAA Championships as well. Who knows, maybe this could be our year to win the entire thing.
