The Illinois basketball team has now been mentioned in an article for a solid class of 2019 recruit.
On Monday, Alex Halsted of 247Sports produced an article about Caleb Grill. He is a young player who continues to land squarely on the recruiting radar of some big-time programs. This kid continues to rise in the recruiting ranks and is now an even more wanted player than before.
Grill is a 6-foot-2, 170-pound point guard from Maize High School in Maize, Kansas. He is rated as a three-star recruit who is the No. 396 player in the class of 2019 and the No. 52 point guard in the nation. He is also the No. 11 player in the state of Kansas as well.
Last year, there were some solid scholarships to come in for Grill. He had offers from Nebraska and Texas Tech. But, on August 1, Grill decided to commit to playing for the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. This was a big get for a smaller tier program.
That recruitment lasted all the way up until March 29, 2019, when Grill decided to back away from his commitment to South Dakota State after their head coach departed for greener pastures. He has now reopened his recruitment and teams are eyeing this kid as a possible late addition to their recruiting class.
Since Grill reopened his recruitment, he has taken unofficial visits to Kansas State and Iowa State. In the article by Halsted, Grill explained that Iowa State was immediately on him once he was released from his scholarship. Grill also says that Illinois, Kansas State and Creighton have all been in contact with him as well.
For Illinois, it would not be a bad idea to add another No. 1 guard to the roster. This upcoming season will, likely, feature Ayo Dosunmu and Andres Feliz filling this role. But, those two will be departing after the campaign. That would leave a huge hole on the team. Grill could step in and be a big part of this team early on in his career.
What Grill can do on the basketball court is exactly what Illinois was missing this season. This kid brings energy and excitement to the game. His has a great shot from anywhere on the court. He has quick hands as well. I think this kid is actually more of a No. 2 guard than a No. 1 guard. That would be even better for the Illini. We could slot him right behind Trent Frazier for his freshman season.

I am curious to see if Illinois can make some serious waves in the recruitment of Grill. He is a player that could help this team in the near future.
