The Illinois golf team competed in the Tar Heel Intercollegiate over the weekend and came out with a top three finish.

Coming into the tournament, the Illini hadn’t been playing their best golf. In the previous competition, the Southern Highlands Collegiate, Illinois had a ninth-place finished out of 15 teams. They needed a strong rebound and that is exactly what happened.

The Tar Heel Intercollegiate featured three top 30 teams in the nation, including the Illini. Illinois finished round one with a total of 286, round two with a 288 and round three with a 295. This was good enough for a three-round total of +5 and a second place finish for the tournament. North Carolina barely nipped the Illini with a tournament score of -1.

Despite the second place finish, a member of the Illinois golf team took home medalist honors. Adrien Dumont de Chassart, Illinois’ No. 3 golf, threw up a -2, 70, in the final round to shoot a three-round total of -9. He won the tournament by six shots of North Carolina golfer, Austin Hitt.

This is exactly what the Illini need right now. They need to find key contributors on the team to help Michael Fealges, Bryan Baumgarten and Giovanni Tadiotto. Having Dumont de Chassart step up and shoot this well is great news for the Orange and Blue. If he can start playing well, this Illini team has a legit shot at making some noise in the NCAA’s.

Other Illinois golfers played well in the Tar Heel Intercollegiate as well. Feagles came in with an overall score of -1 for the contest. This was good enough for a tie for sixth place. Tadiotto also played well as an individual. He shot -1 as well and finished sixth place.

Varun Chopra competed as an individual and shot even for the tournament and placed in a tie for 11th. Brendan O’Reilly threw up a +4 overall score and was in a tie for 23rd. Baumgarten didn’t have his best outing but was still able to shoot +8 for the three rounds and finish in a tie for 36th. Tommy Kuhl shot +11 for a three-round total, which was good for a tie for 50th. Noah Gillard and Luke Armbrust both finished at +18 and in a tie for 74th.

Illinois needed a strong showing at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate and that is what they got. This team wasn’t at full power with Tadiotto competing as an individual. When he is in the top five, this team should be good enough to compete with any team in the nation.
