Lovie Smith and the Illinois football team is now targeting someone who has ties to the head coach.

The Chicago Bears never had a great offense. Sometimes I was impressed with what I was seeing on the field, but most of the time it wasn’t great. One of the few bright spots on offense was wide receiver, Muhsin Muhammad. Well, Illinois is now going after his son.

On Tuesday afternoon, Muhsin Muhammed III announced on Twitter that he had received a scholarship offer from the University of Illinois. This is a big offer for the Illini because of the connection but also because of the need at the wide receiver position.

Muhammad is a 6-foot, 180-pound wide receiver from Myers Park High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is rated as a four-star recruit who is the No. 134 player in the class of 2020 and the No. 24 wide receiver in the nation. He is also the No. 5 player in the state of North Carolina as well.

Let me first start off by saying, wow this makes me feel old. It seems like just yesterday I was watching Rex Grossman and the elder Muhammad connect on the field. Now his son is entering the college ranks. Man does time fly.

Obviously, 247Sports has Michigan State as the leader right now for Muhammad. His dad went to school there, so they should be projected as the favorite right now. But, there are a lot of big-time programs after him including the likes of Tennessee, Oregon and North Carolina. I will be curious to see if the Illini can get in this one. I think the Lovie connection might help our chances.

Illinois needs wide receiver help, especially from a top 150 recruit. Casey Washington is coming in this season, but the Illini will be losing three pass catchers after the 2019 campaign. They are already short-handed as it is. Wide receiver needs to be a focus for this program.

I would love for the Illini to be able to land a recruit like Muhammed who has NFL blood and a ranking in the top 150. He would be a great addition to this program and to an offense that is poised to do great things.
