Illinois Basketball: Ayo Dosunmu wins B1G Freshman of the Week again
Superstar guard Ayo Dosunmu continues to rack up accolades while with the Illinois basketball team.
Two weeks ago, Giorgi Bezhanishvili won the Player of the Week in the Big Ten. He led the Illini to a 2-0 record and knocked off No. 9 Michigan State and Rutgers in that stretch. Ayo won the Big Ten Freshman of the Week as well. He averaged 18 points, 4 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game during this time. It looks like Ayo is not done yet, though.
The Big Ten players of the week were released today for this past week. Giorgi couldn’t hold on to the Player of the Week title as Jordan Murphy of Minnesota took that home. But, Ayo ended up taking home the Freshman of the Week title again. He has now won back-to-back Freshman of the Week awards.
Illinois only played one game last week and that was against Ohio State on Thursday. The Illini went into Buckeye territory and came away with their first road win of the season, 63-56. This was a huge program win for Brad Underwood. Ayo was a big part of this victory as well. He dropped 15 points on 4-of-10 shooting from the field and 2-of-6 from three-point land. He also had four rebounds and three assists as well.
Ayo now averages 14.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game this season. Usually, the trend is when you hit Big Ten season, the numbers start declining. That isn’t the case with Ayo, though. In conference play, he is averaging 15.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. Those are impressive numbers.
Illinois has some great talent on their team right now. They continue to win and more people are taking notice. The fact we have now had back-to-back Freshman of the Week winners is exciting. Underwood has done a great job turning this team around. The future is bright and this probably isn’t the last time someone for the Orange and Blue takes this award home.
