The cornerback position has been an area of weakness for the Illinois football team over the last half-decade or so.

Illinois has had some pretty good ball hawks in the secondary throughout time, but they are going to need to continue building depth in this area for the future. Adding a player like Marquez Beason will help tremendously, but teams will try to go to the other side of the field most of the time, I assume. That is why getting more cornerback help is important, and this next offer will help fill that bill.

Back on January 22, Jahari Rogers announced on Twitter that he had received a scholarship offer from the University of Illinois. Considering the type of offers Rogers has right now and the recruiting ranking, I would say this is a big offer for the Illini.

Rogers is a 6-foot, 170-pound cornerback from Arlington High School in Arlington, Texas. He is rated as a three-star recruit who is the No. 676 player in the class of 2020 and the No. 60 athlete in the nation. He is also the No. 90 player in the state of Texas as well.

Don’t let the sub-500 recruiting ranking fool you. This kid has talent and programs across the country are recognizing that fact. In addition to Illinois, Rogers currently has offers from teams like Oklahoma, TCU and Texas Tech. He is getting some big-time programs looking at him, so it might be a little difficult to land this athletic player.

247Sports lists Rogers as a cornerback at the next level, but I wouldn’t doubt if Illinois is recruiting him as a quarterback. This kid seems to be pretty dynamic at the position. He is able to throw the ball downfield. His shorter passes are less accurate because of touch, but he is a weapon that Rod Smith would love in his offense.

I don’t know what Illinois would do with Rogers. He is a great athlete which gives the Illini the ability to do different things with him. It would be nice to see him suit up for the Orange and Blue.
