There are a lot of players that I believe could be a steal for the Illinois football team when it comes to recruiting.

Some of these players turn out to be really good recruits and others fall in line with their recruiting ranking. As time goes on, one of the Illini commits who continues to prove his recruiting ranking to possibly be way off is Kyron Cumby.

Cumby is a 5-foot-8, 177-pound running back from Plano High School in Plano, Texas. He is rated as a three-star recruit who is the No. 1063 player in the class of 2019 and the No. 137 player in the state of Texas.

I see this recruiting ranking, and I try to justify the recruiting ranking that lands Cumby in the sub-1000’s. Is it because of his speed? That can’t be the case. It is because of his vision? Clearly, that is not the case either. The only reason I believe they could rank Cumby so low is that he is only 5-foot-8. And, honestly, that would be a terrible reason.

Cumby has everything you would ever want in a player and a running back. He has the patience of a Le’Veon Bell and the vision to go along with it as well. It is almost like he toys around with defenders because he knows he has another speed. When he hits a hole, it is like a missile just launched. Before the defender even has time to turn around, Cumby is already 15 yards past him.

The 2018 season has started off great for Cumby as well. The first game of the season didn’t turn out the way Cumby had hoped, as his Plano team fell to Hebron 28-27, but he lit up the scoreboard with his running ability. Cumby finished the game with 15 carries for 238 yards and three touchdowns.

Cumby then followed his great week one performance with seven carries for 146 yards and three touchdowns in a 72-48 win over Eastwood. So, he is averaging 192 yards and three touchdowns per game for the 2018 season. Those are incredible numbers for any player, let alone one who is doing it at the top level.

Some recruits put up big numbers partially because they are talented but also because they don’t play against great competition. That isn’t the case with Cumby. He plays for Plano who in the 6A conference in arguably the biggest football state in the country, Texas. That means Cumby is putting up great numbers against, literally, the best competition in the nation.

Cumby checks just about every box on the list. He has the speed, he has the vision, he has the ability to break tackles and he does it all while playing in the best conference in the biggest football state. I truly believe this when I say it; Illinois is getting the biggest steal in the class of 2019 with the addition of Cumby.
