The Illinois football team gained more momentum on the recruiting front Monday night.

Peyton Powell decided to cut his list down to just 10 teams and included Ohio State, Texas Tech, Baylor, Texas, Virginia, Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, TCU and Illinois. He has an impressive list of scholarship offers and for a good reason.

Powell is a 6-foot-2, 182-pound athlete from Permian High School in Odessa, Texas. He is rated as a three-star recruit who is the No. 445 player in the class of 2019 and the No. 37 athlete in the nation.

The recruitment of Powell is starting to wind down with only 10 teams vying for his commitment. One official visit is off the board as well. He visited Virginia this past weekend before narrowing the scope of his recruitment. Currently, 247Sports has Texas as the leader for his commitment at 100-percent.

Powell plays quarterback at the high school level, but it looks like in college he will most likely be a wide receiver. I really like him as a wide receiver. He has the tools you want. Powell’s speed is off the charts. He will be tough to catch. I don’t really know about his hands, but he is a playmaker and that is all that matters.

Lovie Smith and Rod Smith can use Powell in many different ways. I could see jet sweeps with Powell, and then putting him in the slot as a slot receiving. Bubble screens would be dangerous with this kid too. He has that instant burst of speed that will be dangerous for opposing defenses.

I am curious on Illinois’ chances of landing Powell. They have been successful in recruiting the state of Texas. That is a huge bonus. Plus, they have Andrew Hayes-Stoker on the recruitment, and he has done a great job bringing in players.

On the negative side, Powell clearly has Virginia in his top five. That leaves four spots left. I assume he will include some Texas teams in the mix. That might leave Illinois on the outs.

But, purely based on how well they have recruited in Texas, I think Illinois has a chance here. I wouldn’t be surprised if they make his next cut or get an official visit. At minimum, it is nice to see the Illini make another top list.
