Illinois Football: Peyton Powell receives offer from Illini
The Illinois football team continued offering big-time players for the class of 2019 on Friday night.
One of the most recent offers went to Peyton Powell. He is a 6-foot-2, 182-pound wide receiver from Permian High School in Odessa, Texas. He is rated as a three-star recruit who is the No. 497 player in the class of 2019 and the No. 55 player in the state of Texas.
Illinois isn’t the first to offer Powell, and I am sure they won’t be the last. This kid has a lot of talent and teams have taken notice. 247Sports has his total scholarship count up to 16 right now with the likes of Ohio State, Arkansas and Oklahoma State all vying for his commitment.
It looks like Powell played a lot of quarterback in high school but could be moving to wide receiver or safety at the college level. He has all the attributes to be a great player for whatever team he picks. He has tremendous speed and has the frame to do great things. Being a quarterback would help with his vision as well. He would be able to read the defense as a wide receiver and then if he plays safety, he would be able to read what the offense is doing as well.
Honestly, Illinois needs both positions for the future. They have a nice core at wide receiver right now but there will be a few talented wide receivers departing after this season. The Illini will need replacements for the departing players. The Illini could also use Powell at safety as well.
Bennett Williams will be the Illini starter at one of the safety spots for the next two or three seasons. But, Stanley Green only has two years remaining. He is a junior right now and will be a senior next season. That means Illinois’ depth at safety will start dwindling quickly.

Powell is a really talented player who can play multiple positions. He is exactly what this Illinois program needs right now. Hopefully, the Illini can make up on lost time and snag this talented two-way player.
