5. Coran Taylor – Class of 2018

The history of Illinois quarterbacks isn’t great but they ended up snagging what should be a good one in Coran Taylor in the class of 2018. He is also a homegrown product from right up the road as well.

Taylor is a 6-foot-3, 195-pound dual-threat quarterback from Peoria High School in Peoria, Illinois. He was rated as a three-star recruit who was the No. 873 player in the class of 2018 and the No. 24 dual-threat quarterback in the nation. This get was one of the best by Lovie Smith so far in his short recruiting tenure with the Illini.

The Illinois quarterback situation is kind of a mess right now, but getting a player like Taylor to come in and help in 2018 is huge. If he doesn’t win the starting job that means other quarterbacks outplayed him. The fact Illinois actually has quarterback depth is huge, though. Taylor will push for the starting role and in doing so will make the other passers around him better.

Lovie has secured two of the top five quarterbacks on this list. It makes me wonder what the other coaches were doing in their time in Champaign. Nevertheless, Illinois is getting set up for future success.
