Lovie Smith and the Illinois football team have put a solid class of 2018 together, so far, and they are not done by any means.

The class of 2018 currently consists of 15 commitments with a national ranking of No. 63. I don’t pay too much attention to the national ranking because at this stage in the recruitment process, that number is based on a combination of quality and quantity. Illinois has the quality but the quantity is just not there, yet.

Illinois also has some players in this class who will step in day one and be impact players. Calvin Avery and Reuben Unije are two players who will likely earn starting roles when Illinois opens up their season on September 1 against Kent State. I would also tab one of the two quarterbacks in the class of 2018 – MJ Rivers or Coran Taylor – as the starter heading into the season as well.

Getting impact players who can contribute right away is extremely important for being competitive. That is why hearing the Illini are in the top four for Terin Adams is a big deal.

Adams is a junior college transfer from City College of San Francisco. He is the No. 83 JUCO transfer in the nation and someone many teams were after. But, Adams decided to cut his list down to just four programs, and he kept Kansas, Arizona State, San Diego State and Illinois on his list.

According to Rivals, Adams has been on three official visits so far. He visited San Diego State on December 1, Illinois on December 8 and Kansas this past weekend.

I really think this kid could help the Illini tremendously with their depth at cornerback in 2018. Adams is quick and can keep up with wide receivers. I also like his aggression on the football field as well. He has a bulldog mentality and that is scary in the secondary.

Illinois had some nice pieces develop at cornerback in 2017. Tony Adams was looking good until he went down with an injury for the year. Nate Hobbs truly had a sensational year as a true freshman. I am surprised he didn’t get more notoriety. Although, he did make the Big Ten Network All-Freshman Team.

Adams would be a nice addition to those two young cornerbacks. Illinois also has a few more solid pieces coming in from the class of 2018 who will continue to build depth.

The Illini are competing for a talented JUCO cornerback who would help the program moving forward. I would love to have him as a member of this team.
