Mike Shaw

Illinois signed a great class of 2011. Mike Shaw was a member of this class and, at the time, a great get from De Le Salle High School in Chicago.

Shaw was a highly rated recruit. He was a four-star power forward who was ranked as the No. 59 player in the class of 2011. He had big-time offers from teams like West Virginia, Notre Dame and Marquette. But, Shaw ended up choosing Illinois over all the other schools.

The stay in Champaign was short for Shaw, though. He had a freshman season where he only played 7 minutes per game and averaged .9 points and 1.9 rebounds. Shaw’s production didn’t pick up in year two. In fact, he actually saw less playing time only averaging 3.6 minutes and in that time put up .9 points and .8 rebounds per contest.

After two years with the Illini, Shaw decided to take his talents elsewhere. This might have had something to do with the firing of Bruce Weber and the hiring of Groce, though. But, Shaw ended up not going too far away from Champaign. He decided to transfer to Bradley.

While at Bradley, not much changed. His first year playing, he averaged 14.5 minutes per game and in that time dropped 1.9 points and pulled down 3.4 rebounds per contest. He was then forced to end his basketball career because of a back injury that continued to pop up. At one time, Shaw was looked at as a big-time get for the Illini but things didn’t pan out.
