DJ Williams

When DJ Williams committed to Illinois from the class of 2015, I thought special things were going to come from this kid. He was a good get in what was projected as a good class.

Williams was rated as a three-star recruit who was the No. 118 player in the class of 2015. Groce pulled him from Simeon High School in Chicago. He also had offers from programs like Florida, Georgetown and Purdue.

In year one with the Illini, Williams averaged 11 minutes per game. In that time, he averaged 2.1 points and 1.4 rebounds per game as well. This was a solid freshman campaign and his sophomore season was supposed to be a step forward.

But, that didn’t happen with Williams. He actually regressed last season for one reason or another. He only averaged 8.8 minutes in each contest and in that time, he averaged 2.3 points and .9 rebounds per game. This was not the progression I had hoped for.

Groce was then fired as the Illinois head coach, so this was a chance for Williams to leave the Illinois program and start fresh. He decided to transfer out and committed to George Washington University. Look for him to resurrect his career in the next few years. He is a talented player who will end up getting his basketball life back on track.
