Illinois Football: 4 reasons why the Illini are losing games
The Illinois football team dropped to 2-4 on the season after an ugly loss against a bad Rutgers Scarlet Knights program.
This is a game Illinois needed to win and should have been a victory based on how bad Rutgers is as a program. The Illini shouldn’t lose to that bad of a team but the score ended up being 35-24. The expectations for this football team were higher than what they are now but should they have been lower the entire time?
I had bowl aspirations heading into this season. Illinois won three games last year and there was some solid talent returning led by Mike Dudek. But, the quarterback situation is a lot worse than I thought it would be and there are more freshmen starting than I thought could ever possibly start for a team in my lifetime.
When I watch this Illinois team play, I feel like there are sparks of clarity at times and they figure out how to gel and work together. This happens and the drive goes well. But, then there are times that I think they all just met yesterday and they don’t have any team chemistry at all.
The losing is really depressing but I need to really lower my expectations for this team. If they can get to four wins I will be happy now. That will be a struggle, though. Next season, I will still probably pick them to go to a bowl game. But, my biggest question now is, why are we losing?
Why aren’t there moments of clarity more often with this team? When they are clicking, they can score at-will. But, those are few and far between. Here are four reasons why Illinois is losing right now.
