No. 71 Demetri McCamey

The Illinois basketball team was coming off a nice run of talented point guards when Demetri McCamey came onto the scene. They needed to replenish the position and he was supposed to be the answer.

McCamey is arguably the most underrated player in Illinois basketball history. He had a great career statistically, but coming after a national title run is hard to follow.

In high school, McCamey dazzled at St. Joseph. He was a special player and this enabled him to get looked at by programs across the nation.

McCamey was a four-star point guard who was the No. 71 player in the class of 2007 and the No. 10 point guard in the nation. He was a highly recruited player as well.

During the recruitment process, McCamey picked up offers from schools like Indiana, Michigan and Wake Forest. These programs were tough competition, but Illinois came out ahead and pulled in this talented point guard.

The career that McCamey put together was actually quite special. His best season was his junior campaign in which he averaged 15.1 points, 7.1 assists and 3.6 rebounds per game.

When McCamey’s career was finished, he averaged 12.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game. That is a solid career in the orange and blue and he will always be remembered as one of the most underrated players.
